If you google “Kim Jong-un” and “notebooks” you get thousands of hits. In picture after picture you find the supreme leader surrounded with an entourage of generals, government officials and assistants. If you look closer they have all one thing i common: notebooks.

What you are looking at is a demonstration of the leader's supposed power, knowledge, wisdom and concern. It's "on-the-spot guidance" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/On-the-spot_guidance), something instigated by his grandfather Kim Il-sung in the 1950s. It's part of the image of the great leader offering benevolent guidance.
